The social security system is supposed to be available to help those who are disabled and unable to earn a living. There are two different benefit programs that can provide monthly income. Supplemental security income (SSI) is designed to help aged, blind and disabled people who have little to no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing and shelter. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is available to people who have worked at least five of the last ten years, and paid into the system, through a type of Social Security tax called a “FICA” contribution.
While these programs are designed to help people who fall within these categories, the process to obtain these benefits is difficult, and many qualified persons are initially denied. Don’t give up. There is an appeals process that may allow you to collect the benefits that you deserve, but it is complicated, and there are strict time tables that you must comply with.
