Historically, women have been discriminated against in the workforce. They have not received equal pay, and they have been provided with fewer opportunities for advancement. While the situation has improved, gender discrimination is still an unfortunate fact of life. Unconscious attitudes may lead employers to treat people according to their notions of how men or women should be. But employers are not permitted to treat employees unequally. The law requires them to give women and men equal salaries and equal opportunities.
