Public Employee Disability Retirement

Public sector workers who suffer an injury on the job that prevents them from performing their essential duties, or who become ill due to a hazard they were exposed to on the job are entitled to accidental disability retirement under Massachusetts law. This benefit provides a retiree with a pension of 72% of their regular pay prior to their injury. Additionally, workers who are rendered disabled by an injury that is not work-related are also eligible for ordinary disability retirement, which provides a reduced pension. But the process for both can be lengthy and complex.
